I turn my sketching attention this week to the world of comic books. Hellboy, one of my all time favorite comic book characters, is the creation of one of my all time favorite comic artists, Mike Mignola. I can never hope to touch Mignola’s mastery of line and shadow, but I try my best to put my own spin on his famous demon. The above piece was started as a pencil sketch (posted below) and was then rendered in markers on a sheet of vellum.

If you’re a Mignola fan like me, you might be interested in a couple of videos I found on YouTube of Mike drawing live at San Diego Comic Con in 2009. Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4

I had planned to do a similar idea. But Dude, this blows what I had planned completely out of the water.
