Summer
Summer started her comic strip life as a sight gag. I wrote a strip where Landon was going ga ga over a hot vampire chick, and thus began the design process. Summer was probably the easiest character to design of everyone in the strip. I just did your basic cute, goth Betty Page, Elvira type thing, and there she was. After seeing her on my paper, I knew I had to write more than just a simple gag for her, so I did.
Now, some of you may ask, why name a vampire girl “Summer”? Well, I struggled for a long time to come up with a name, like most of my characters. Designing the visuals is the easy part for me. Names are hard. They have to fit just right. This name came to me much like Landon’s name, through listening to music. In Summer’s case, I got her name after listening to Danzig. The song in question was “Dirty Black Summer”. Now, this is not necessarily a reference to her reputation. I have no intention of writing her in that way, I just really like the irony of a vampire named Summer, that’s all there was to it.
