Guest Art: Brad Joyce

This week, Spooky Doofus is back to it’s regular Tuesday Thursday schedule, but that doesn’t mean I can’t squeeze in one more piece of guest art. This one comes from Brad Joyce. Brad has been a loyal supporter of my silly drawings for years now and for that alone he’s earned my never ending gratitude. Now comes this wonderful piece that just makes me smile! The gag in this piece is a nod to my daughters, Zoe and Penny. Zoe is often lovingly nick named “Zoe Monster” mostly because she shares a name with Elmo’s friend on Sesame Street, while Penelope I’ve referred to as a “hungry little monkey” on more than one occasion due to her hollow legs. (BTW, 50 points to anyone who can guess what the “Were-Human” poster is a reference to.)

Nine years! It’s been nine years since Jenny Everwhere first appeared on the wonderful internet. Last year, Jenny Everywhere Day was started as a way to mark Jenny’s birthday with a collection of art from a wide variety of artists in one place. I am and have been for a very long time, a big Alice Cooper fan. Without Alice, the world would be a much more dull place. KISS, David Bowie, Motley Crue, Marilyn Manson, and even Lady Ga Ga are just a few of the acts that regularly walk the streets that Alice paved.

For this drawing I used Prismacolor Verithin pencils on tan card stock paper. No fancy tricks, just plain old fashioned drawing on paper.

New Fan Art! Roland Perez

Today we have another great piece of fan art from Spooky Doofus super fan and creator of Metal Jaw Comics, Roland Perez. What I like most about this piece is you can really see Roland’s style starting to gel. There’s nothing quite like seeing my characters interpreted by other artists. It’s a real thrill for me. Hopefully you enjoy seeing alternate takes on my Spooky characters, too because in the coming month, I’ve got some surprises in store. Stay tuned!

Coloring in Between the Lines

A while back, good friend and fellow cartoonist, Lucas Turnbloom asked for my assistance in a big project of his. Aside from his wonderfully wacky comic Imagine THIS, he has an all new, all ages graphic novel in the works. This graphic novel was in need of some color for it’s cover, and Lucas enlisted my mighty Photoshop skills to add some C, M, & Y to his K (sorry, lame printing joke). Anyway, here’s a small peek at Lucas’ dramatic cover with my colorful embellishments. For a little better look at the cover and announcements on Lucas’ other projects check out THIS blog entry. Of course, as soon as I know more about when the book is available, I will let you all know.

Sketch cards now available.

I just listed a couple of Spooky Doofus sketch cards for sale on ebay. They’re original pencil sketches on 2.5″ x 3.5″ sketch cards drawn by me, of course. This is an experiment on my part to see if anyone is willing to pay money for my little drawings. If the response is good enough, I’ll post some more after these are gone. If you want a sketch card, but have a specific image or character in mind that’s not currently listed, drop me line and we can work something custom out. Ghosts of Guest Art Past: I Am GEEK!

I did this piece a couple of years ago to show some love to Benj Christensen’s webcomic, I Am GEEK! Geek is currently on an extended hiatus, but can still be found starting HERE. I became a big fan of Benj’s geek-centric humor way back when I started Boxcar Astronaut in 2007. Benj was one of the first webcomic creators I got to know online and we’ve been internet friends ever since. SFO: Behind the magic!

The second and final page of my brief run on Brock Heasley’s SuperFogeys Origins is up today. In honor of that I thought I’d share a peek at the pencils for the story. Now, be warned, the pics are from my phone, so they’re not exactly top quality. I snapped these shots after I finished each page’s pencil work to send them to Brock so he could be in on what I was doing with his words. That’s the great thing about modern technology, it makes a long distance creative collaboration with a short deadline so much easier.
