Sharktopus Lives!

Remember that Sharktopus sketch I did for Spooky Sketch Sunday a while back? Well, since posting it, I received an email from an assistant to Roger Corman saying that they liked the image so much, they wanted to use it on official Sharktopus merchandise. After some negotiating, it was agreed that I would produce a finished illustration of the initial sketch. Now, a couple of weeks later, the finished product is appearing on t-shirts and other items in their Zazzle shop! What you see here is the result of this unexpected, yet totally fun project:

I am and have been for a very long time, a big Alice Cooper fan. Without Alice, the world would be a much more dull place. KISS, David Bowie, Motley Crue, Marilyn Manson, and even Lady Ga Ga are just a few of the acts that regularly walk the streets that Alice paved.

For this drawing I used Prismacolor Verithin pencils on tan card stock paper. No fancy tricks, just plain old fashioned drawing on paper.

Illustration: Boris Karloff as The Mummy

I’ve been on a classic horror icons kick lately. This latest piece was done in the same fashion as my Bela Lugosi drawing. I first did a pencil sketch (which I posted on Twitter HERE), then inked on a sheet of vellum over the pencils. My weapons of choice were my brush pen and my fountain pen for the finer lines. The ever trusty Sharpie was brought in for the heavy black areas.

I chose to depict Boris Karloff as the Mummy mostly because the more famous Frankenstein’s Monster has been done a lot. I felt the Mummy would be a much more challenging character to render, and therefore a little more educational on my part.

It’s no big secret that the style of Spooky Doofus is heavily influenced by the classic Universal Studios monster movies. For this piece I wanted to take that influence all the way and render a tribute to the King of the Universal Monsters, Count Dracula himself, Bela Lugosi. I originally started this a pencil sketch while on lunch break at my day job. I posted a shot of the pencils HERE via Twitter a couple of days ago. After the pencil sketch was done, I placed a sheet of vellum over it and began inking. I used a combo of fountain pen and brush pen with some King Size Sharpie brought in for some of the heavy black areas. (Make sure you crack a window when using one of those bad boys, kids!)

I’ve been doing a lot of non-Spooky pieces of art lately. Drawings like this are a good way for me to flex my creative muscles a little bit and try new things. I did this one to try to capture the raw, honest rock n’ roll that Tom Petty does so well.

Ziggy Stardust illustration

I remember when I first heard the opening riff of Ziggy Stardust. It felt like I just stepped into strange, alien world that somehow felt like a home I never new I belonged in. The uncanny weirdness and undeniable charisma of David Bowie’s alter ego is what I’ve tried to capture in this drawing.

After laying out the pencils, I then inked onto a sheet of vellum placed over the pencils. Final color and shading was added using markers and a little bit of colored pencils for accents. Below I’ve included a couple of shots of this piece in progess that I originally posted last week on Twitter while I was working on it.
